You meet in front of the Marcus Aurelius statue in Piazza del Campidoglio — the bronze in the open square, which is a replica placed there in 1997; the original is inside, in the glazed Esedra, and your guide will take you to it. The guide holds a sign with your name and issues the tickets.
It holds a perfect 5.0 from 43 reviews, and almost every one of them names the same guide. George from the United States: “Vincenzo was a great guide. He made everything more interesting.” Sandra from Australia called him “a wealth of knowledge & enthusiasm.” Elizabeth from the United States: “an amazing guide and teacher.” Kaushik from Singapore went furthest — “the best guide I have had in my 7 days of travel in Italy.” A perfect score across 43 reviews is thinner evidence than 4.3 across 1,423, and you should weigh it that way, but the consistency of who is being praised is unusual. And it is listed as not suitable for wheelchair users or visitors with mobility impairments, which is a real limitation given that the hill has three wheelchair-usable carriage roads and the museum itself has lifts and stairlifts. Rated 4.5 across 21 reviews, and the reviews are about exactly what you would hope for from an art historian rather than a general guide — Ali from the United Kingdom described a guide who could “draw into his reservoir of historical knowledge to make interesting connections.”
The wrinkle: the booking maximum is 20 people. That is a legitimate small-group product and a poor private one. If you are a family of four booking the whole thing yourselves it behaves privately; if you are two people, you may be sharing with eighteen others. The Percy Jackson tour — private, four people, built for children

The four-person cap is the tightest here and it means something: this is the one product on the hill where you are genuinely never in a group. Adults book it too, and the reviews suggest it works on them, but it is designed around a child’s attention span. The museum’s own label still puts the She-Wolf in the 5th century BC, while radiocarbon work on casting-core residues published from 2007 places the bronze between AD 1021 and 1153, and thermoluminescence testing in 2021 agreed with the medieval range. The twins are a separate, uncontroversial 15th-century addition. A good guide will enjoy the argument; a bad one will not have heard of it.
